One of the major objectives for the formation of the southern regional chapter of IANCAS with its headquarters at IGCAR, Kalpakkam has been the desire to continue the school workshops in both English and the vernacular medium in the southern region. In a meeting between IANCAS members from southern region on 27th November, 2000 a resolution was passed requesting the main body to consider the formation of a southern chapter. This resolution was discussed at the annual general body meeting of our association during NUCAR 2001 at Pune and the general body agreed to the formation of the chapter. Approval from the Commissioner of Charities, Mumbai for the necessary amendments to our constitution to permit the formation of the regional chapter was obtained in February 2002 and on 6th May 2002, the formal approval from the main body was obtained. The first elections to the chapter management committee was held during September 2002 and the first executive committee took office.
The formal inauguration of the Southern Regional Chapter took place on 24th October, 2002 by Shri S.B. Bhoje, Director, IGCAR. On this occasion, Dr. S.B. Manohar delivered a lecture on Applications of Radiochemistry in Peaceful Nuclear Explosions. The IANCAS thematic bulletin on Fast Breeder Reactors (Guest Editors were the president and secretary of the SRC) was also formally released on this occasion.
Two of the greatest radiochemists of the past century have been Dr. Marie Curie and Dr. Glenn T Seaborg. The meticulous chemistry carried out by the former leading to the isolation of radium and polonium has revealed the potential of chemical separations in many applications. The discoveries of Dr. Seaborg in the field of artificial radionuclides is legendary and include plutonium and the trans-plutonium isotopes. The executive committee of the southern regional chapter decided that it was but appropriate that the birth anniversaries of these two great radiochemists be appropriately remembered and have decided to organize the Seaborg Memorial Lecture in April and the Curie Memorial Lecture in November every year.
One of the main reasons for the formation of this regional chapter is dissemination of information via the school workshops in the southern regional. Initially, those schools are being covered that are in and around Chennai. A list of workshops already conducted is listed in the annexure.
In view of our interest in conducting school workshops in the vernacular medium, the Tamil translation of the book “Introduction to Radioactivity” by Dr. Sood and Dr. Reddy has been carried out. The parent body has printed 300 copies of this book and it is proposed to distribute some copies along with each vernacular workshop. The Tamil translation has been carried out by Shri R. Kumar and N. Ramanathan of RCL, IGCAR.
